and heading into the new year. and it would give us more time than next year to work together on a comprehensive plan to bring down our deficits, to streamline our tax system, to do it in a balanced way, including asking the wealthiest americans to pay a little more so we can invest in training, education, science, and research. now, i know some of this may sound familiar to you because we talked a lot about this during the campaign. this shouldn't be a surprise to anybody. this was a major debate in the presidential campaign and in congressional campaigns all across the country and a clear majority of americans, not just democrats but also a lot of republicans and a lot of independents agreed we should have a balanced approach to deficit reduction that doesn't hurt the economy and doesn't hurt middle class families. and i'm glad to see, if you've been reading the papers lately, that more and more republicans in congress seem to be agreeing with this idea that we should have a balanced approach. so if both parties agree we should not raise taxes on middle class families, let's

hours. really trying to put a u.s. stamp, footprint, if you will, on the negotiations. how much leverage does the u.s. have in actually making sure that the cease-fire is something that's going to hold? >> well the u.s. doesn't have much leverage over hamas because the u.s. doesn't deal with hamas. the u.s. government, previous governments, regards hamas as a terrorist organization. when secretary of state hillary clinton visits here in jerusalem later, then goes to ramallah to meet with mahmoud abbas tomorrow and then goes to cairo she's not going to meet with anyone from hamas. the u.s. does have leverage on egypt, given the economic and military assistance the u.s. provides to egypt and given the dire economic straits that the egyptians are in right now. so the u.s. has leverage on the egyptians and obviously the u.s. has very good relations with israel. so the u.s. is a key player in all of this. but as far as leverage on hamas, u.s. leverage is limited. >> secretary of state hillary clinton's arriving soon in jerusalem about three hours or so from now. she'll go to ramallah, then on

is over. but first this here. new information just in to us at cnn. two iranian fighter jets fired at an unarmed u.s. predator drone. we're hearing it happened last week. barbara starr is at the pentagon for us with this exclusive report. barbara, tell us what you know. >> reporter: new military tensions now with iran. cnn has learned it was last thursday just one week ago that two iranian su-25, old russian fighter jets they operate flew out in to the persian gulf in to international air space and fired on a u.s. air force predator drone, an unmanned drone in international air space that the pentagon insists conducting routine all toe classified maritime surveillance. the iranian air force hit the drone. the drone was able to return to base in that region. but this does raise some serious new tensions with iran. it was, of course, just a few days before the presidential election. here in the united states. officials that we have talked to confirming it after we questioned them say they just don't know at this point what the iranians were up to. just out to cause trouble or trying

a million man demonstration that has been called. give us a sense why are people still protest and what do we expect in the next 24 hours, the days to come? >> reporter: well, they're protesting because they're angry with president morsi, his dekoreas and how the drafting of this constitution has unfolded, and there doesn't soop seem to be an end to the protest. they're back here in big numbers. tens of thousands of them here in tahrir square. we're going to show you what it looks like at this hour. i think one of the outcomes of the 2011 egyptian revolution was that egyptians became very good in protesting, so it doesn't matter what people are fighting for here. it seems they like to come out and free-throws the opposition factions that are back here in tahrir. these are the liberals, the seculars. we were just down there. we saw a lot of women, women's rights activists who don't like how this constitution was drafted. they don't believe they were well represented in the panel that drafted this constitution, and they're demanding that president morsi anulls the draft of this constitution

square. most of us were thinking that mohammed morsi really very much the peacemaker, key to the cease-fire between israel and hamas. doesn't even settle with the truce and then morsi announces this decree essentially a huge power grab. what is the significance? >> reporter: well, suzanne, the significance is until a parliament is formed here in egypt, until a constitution is drafted, he is the most powerful man in egypt, and, technically, he can do whatever he wants without any apparent oversight. that's why he is being called egypt's new dictator. that's why you have thousands of protests taking place behind us in tahrir square. the protesters represent the opposing factions, the liberals, the secularists, women's rights groups, the youth groups. essentially, their position is that we're not going to talk to mr. morsi until he rescinds his decrees, and we spoke to one of his top advisors today, and he said he'll consider that, but first there needs to be a dialogue. let's take a listen to the advisor. >> what kind of concessions are you willing to make? >> this decision is up to the

regarding the fiscal cliff and his obama line. tell us what it is. >> that's right, suzanne. he has laid out that his negotiating terms include the following. he is willing to compromise and raise some revenue by altering some parts of medicare and medicaid on entitlement reforms. he is also insistent that some revenue be raised by changing the tax rates. you know, those bush tax cuts expire at the end of this year, and he has said that the wealthiest americans must pay more. we've heard it on the campaign trail over and over. one thing he has hit is that those who make $250,000 and more must pay more. maybe he'll move that number. who knows. he did say quite clearly the white house has that they would veto any bill that does not include a tax increase for the wealthiest americans, suzanne. >> jessica, we heard boehner, john boehner, actually within the last 30 minutes or so talking about that there are ways to raise revenue and spending cuts as well in a all options are on the table. do you think the white house sees that as some sort of opening, if you will, to negotiations? >> i think bot
